infusion would be running to keep the IV line patent until the delayed infusion begins. Note The system does not revert to KVO at the end of an infusion when the Delay Start feature is used and the Alaris System does not display an audio or visual alert when the delayed infusion is complete unless a CALLBACK AFTER option has been programmed.
KVO alarms should be high priority. If a health care provider fails to respond to a KVO End of Infusion alarm for a critical medication a delay in care and/or under infusion of medication can take place which may lead to death or serious injury because the patient will be receiving a non therapeutic rate of medication.

Feb 11 2017 For KVO a microdrip set 60 gtt/mL and a 250 mL IV bag can be used. KVO should have a specific infusion rate such as 10 to 20 mL/hr or should be given according to the institution’s protocol. CALCULATION OF INTRAVENOUS FLOW RATE. Three different methods can be used to calculate IV flow rate drops per minute or gtt/min .

Aug 30 2010 KVO or TKO..keep vein open or to keep open generally refers to a very slow rate to maintain the patency of the VAD you are using. For example in home infusion we set our ambulatory pumps at a KVO rate of 0.2 ml an hour between the doses. The pateimt will stay hooked up at all times and the pump can deliver the doses as we set it.
Feb 26 2020 The purpose of a minimum infusion KVO rate is to prevent central line occlusions and any associated delays in care. At the adult acute care KVO rate of 30 mL/hour patients with two central lumens passively receive 1440 mL of fluid per day.
Infusion time is calculated from the time the administration commences i.e. the infusion starts dripping to when it ends i.e. the infusion stops dripping . Services leading up to the infusion and following the infusion have been included in the infusion code services and are not reported separately. Source CPT Assistant September 2007 23

Mistakes when setting the infusion rate or volume can damage the patient. All infusion devices should be used under close monitoring of patients. Special considerations for COVID 19 or other highly infectious patients is the length of the infusion IV tubing which can cause higher resistance in the delivery of the infusion solution and alarms

The purpose of a minimum infusion KVO rate is to prevent central line occlusions and any associated delays in care. The Infusion Nurses Society in the absence of any conclusive evidence to support one rate over another has set a practice recommendation for a KVO rate at 10 mL/hour for electronic volumetric pumps.
The defined amount remaining in the syringe will trigger the KVO function. KVO function is only available with continuous infusions. Near End of Infusion NEOI allows an alert to sound anywhere from 1 to 60 minutes before the infusion is complete. You can press the silence key to silence the alert.

Oct 07 2008 I am also very interested in responses to your questions about how this decision is made. From my past experience we never added another fluid to bring an infusion to the minimum KVO rate. That mag infusion at 11.5 ml per hour will be on an infusion pump so the actual rate is not what keeps the line open. It is the pumping action.
